Ingredients
Scale
1 cup (227g) unsalted butter, softened to room temperature
4 cups (480g) powdered sugar, sifted
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
2–4 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
Pinch of salt
Instructions
Place the softened butter in the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment. Beat the butter on medium speed for 3 to 5 minutes until it is pale and very fluffy. Scrape down the sides of the bowl as needed.
Gradually add the sifted powdered sugar, one cup at a time, mixing on low speed until fully incorporated after each addition.
Add the vanilla extract and the pinch of salt. Mix on low speed until combined.
Add 2 tablespoons of heavy cream or milk. Increase the mixer speed to medium-high and beat for 3 to 5 minutes until the frosting is light and airy. This whipping time is key for a fluffy texture.
If the frosting seems too stiff for spreading, add the remaining cream, one teaspoon at a time, until you reach your desired consistency. If it is too soft, add a small amount of extra sifted powdered sugar.
Use immediately for frosting cakes, cupcakes, or cookies.
Notes
For the best results and a stable frosting, ensure your butter is truly at room temperature, not melted.
Sifting the powdered sugar prevents lumps and helps achieve a smooth vanilla topping.
If you need a very stiff frosting for intricate piping, reduce the liquid slightly or add 1 tablespoon of meringue powder to the sugar.
This classic vanilla frosting is best used the day it is made for optimal texture.
