Make rich, pan-fried French toast stuffed with a sweet, creamy center. This recipe delivers golden-brown, crispy edges and a warm, gooey filling, perfect for an indulgent weekend breakfast or brunch centerpiece.

  • 8 thick slices brioche or challah bread
  • 8 ounces cream cheese, softened
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 large egg
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • Pinch of salt
  • 2 tablespoons butter, for frying

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, mix the softened cream cheese, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract until smooth. This is your cream cheese filling.
  2. Take four slices of bread. Spread half of the cream cheese mixture evenly over one side of each of these four slices.
  3. Top each cream cheese-covered slice with one of the remaining four slices of bread, creating four sandwiches. Gently press the edges together.
  4. In a shallow dish, whisk together the egg, milk, cinnamon, and salt to create the custard batter.
  5. Heat a large skillet or griddle over medium heat and melt half of the butter.
  6. Dip each stuffed sandwich into the egg batter, turning to coat both sides quickly. Do not let the bread soak too long.
  7. Place the coated sandwiches onto the hot skillet. Cook for 3 to 4 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy. Adjust heat as needed to cook the center without burning the exterior.
  8. Remove the French toast from the skillet and keep warm while you cook the remaining sandwiches, adding more butter to the pan as needed.
  9. Slice the stuffed French toast in half diagonally before serving.
