You create a comforting dessert that merges the sweet, spiced apples of a classic pie with the soft, swirled dough of a cinnamon roll. This recipe uses store-bought dough for a quick assembly.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 (13.2 ounce) package refrigerated cinnamon rolls with icing
  • 2 large Granny Smith apples, peeled, cored, and sliced thin
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup powdered sugar (for extra icing)
  • 12 teaspoons milk or cream (for extra icing)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly grease a 9-inch pie dish.
  2. In a medium bowl, combine the sliced apples, granulated sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Toss gently until the apples are evenly coated.
  3. Unroll the package of cinnamon rolls. Separate the rolls. You will use most of these for the crust and topping.
  4. Press about 6 to 7 of the cinnamon rolls flat into the bottom of the prepared pie dish to form a base layer. If needed, gently stretch the dough to cover the bottom.
  5. Spoon the apple filling evenly over the dough base. Dot the top of the apples with the small pieces of butter.
  6. Arrange the remaining 4 to 5 cinnamon rolls on top of the apple filling. You can place them whole or gently pull them apart slightly to cover more surface area.
  7. Bake for 35 to 45 minutes, or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly. If the edges start to brown too quickly, cover them loosely with foil.
  8. While the pie cools slightly, prepare the extra icing. Whisk the powdered sugar with the milk or cream until you reach a smooth, drizzly consistency.
  9. Remove the pie from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 20 minutes. Drizzle the included cinnamon roll icing and your prepared extra icing over the warm pie before slicing and serving.

Notes

  • You can substitute the store-bought cinnamon rolls with your favorite homemade cinnamon roll dough recipe if you prefer.
  • For a richer flavor, use a mix of apple varieties like Honeycrisp and Granny Smith.
  • If you want a crispier crust, bake the bottom layer for 5 minutes before adding the filling.
