Ingredients
Scale
1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup milk
1/2 cup vegetable oil
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 teaspoon white vinegar
1 cup boiling water
1/2 cup granulated sugar (for sauce)
1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for sauce)
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease an 8×8 inch baking pan.
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, 1/2 cup cocoa powder, baking soda, and salt.
Add the milk, vegetable oil, vanilla extract, and vinegar to the dry ingredients. Mix with a spoon or whisk until just combined. Do not overmix.
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared baking pan.
In a separate small bowl, whisk together the remaining 1/2 cup sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder for the sauce. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the batter in the pan.
Carefully pour 1 cup of boiling water over the top of the batter and sprinkle mixture. The water will soak through.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes. The cake top will look set, and the sauce will form beneath it.
Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving. Serve warm.
Notes
Serve this warm chocolate cake immediately with a scoop of vanilla ice cream for the best experience.
For an extra decadent chocolate dessert, you can add 1/2 cup of chocolate chips to the dry ingredients before adding the wet ingredients.
This easy homemade cake is best eaten the day it is made to keep the sauce gooey.
