Make ultra fudgy, dense brownies topped with rich chocolate ganache and colorful candy chips. This recipe tastes better than the store-bought version.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips (for batter)
  • 1 cup powdered sugar (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder (for frosting)
  • 3 tablespoons milk (for frosting)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (for frosting)
  • 1/4 cup candy-coated chocolate chips (sprinkles)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang for easy removal.
  2. In a medium saucepan over low heat, melt the butter. Remove from heat and whisk in the granulated sugar and brown sugar until combined.
  3. Whisk in the eggs one at a time, mixing well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, cocoa powder, salt, and baking powder.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined. Do not overmix. Fold in the 1/2 cup of chocolate chips.
  6. Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
  7. Bake for 25 to 30 minutes. A toothpick inserted near the center should come out with moist crumbs attached, not wet batter.
  8. Let the brownies cool completely in the pan on a wire rack.
  9. Prepare the ganache frosting: In a small bowl, whisk together the powdered sugar and 1/4 cup cocoa powder.
  10. Add the milk and vanilla extract. Whisk until the frosting is smooth and spreadable. Add a tiny bit more milk if it is too thick.
  11. Spread the chocolate ganache evenly over the cooled brownies.
  12. Immediately sprinkle the candy-coated chocolate chips over the frosting before it sets.
  13. Allow the frosting to set for about 30 minutes. Lift the brownies out using the parchment paper overhang and cut into squares.

Notes

  • For an extra fudgy brownie, reduce the baking time by 2-3 minutes.
  • You can substitute the milk in the frosting with heavy cream for a richer ganache texture.
  • Store leftover brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to four days.
